From the outset of our endeavours it has been clear food and food miles was the area in which Cuckfield Local would be able to make a meaningful and lasting difference. The local market has, to date, been the most visible side of our efforts. The next step is to try and meet some of the obvious demand from people wishing to grow their own food.
In conjunction with Warden Park School we have developed a Community Garden and Orchard project, which aims to give people in the village, many of whom have been on allotment waiting lists for some time, access to their own growing space, as well as the opportunity to participate in a local, community activity in support of young people.
A substantial piece of school land has been allocated and is waiting for an army of would be allotment holders to get involved. The space already has the beginnings of a small orchard featuring local varieties, beyond that we have ideas for poly-tunnels, beekeeping and other projects.
As a successful applicant you would be allocated your own space with access after school hours, weekends and holidays and be willing to give occasional help to set up and maintain a school plot.
We are also looking for volunteer helpers and expert helpers who could offer their time and skills to get the project off the ground.
Our launch event / open day takes place on 15 May 2010 and we are busy organising this, including contacting local suppliers of horticultural materials who may be in a position to lend support.
